Gordinho is determined to help Eric Tinkler’s side return to the top of the table after spending the last two years in Europe with Vyborg and HB Kog.

“This opportunity came for me to come back to Cape Town City, and the way they run the team and the players they have, they have the foundation of the club,” said the former Kaizer Chiefs centre-back.

“The team is in a good place and my biggest ambition is to help the team reach their desired goals for the season and that is the most important thing.”

Tuihli Thawahla made a bright start to progress. But four defeats from their last five games have left them outside the top eight in ninth position.

Like City, Khabo Zondo’s side had African promise to contend with. And they competed in the CAF Confederation Cup qualifiers before being knocked out by TP Mazembe in the playoffs.

The Durban club can now focus solely on domestic matters in the new year. And Zondo admits he needs to work on cutting out the mistakes. That led to their poor form in September and October. As was evident in the 3-0 defeat to Sundowns. Before the six week break.

“Tactically we were good [against Sundown], although at times we looked like a punching bag because we were in defense and every time we won the ball. We lost it again,” he said.

“It didn’t look like a 3-0 game to me. It was just the mistakes we made at the back.”

PLAYERS TO WATCH

CAPE TOWN CITY

Khanisa Mayo: The 24-year-old forward has been City’s standout performer this season. Registering four goals and two assists in 12 league appearances. Mayo’s form earned him a Bafana Bafana call-up in September. And he made his international debut against Sierra Leone before winning three more caps. One area where he can improve is his conversion rate as he creates a lot of chances. But doesn’t take enough of them.

Lyle Lucke: The 31-year-old left-back has had more time to embed himself at City after making four appearances for the club. Following his switch from Sundowns in September. Luck has played a key role in the Brazilian’s success in recent years. And he will be expected to make an even bigger impact in the second half of the campaign.

ROYAL AM

Mfundo Thikazi: The 23-year-old midfielder was left out of the squad for the first three games of the season. But has gradually eased his way into Zondo’s plans with some impressive performances. Thikaji opened his account with a match-winning brace against Sekukhune United before a 3–1 defeat by SuperSport United.

Motebang Sera: The 27-year-old Lesotho international missed the first five games of the campaign due to work permit issues. Arriving from the Golden Arrows in July. However, he scored his best goal on debut against Maritzburg United and registered his second goal of the season in a 3–1 win over his former employers.
