Two Swedes are suspected of having travelled to Ireland to carry out a contract killing, but on the way there they crashed in a violent car accident, according to media reports. The incident, which occurred on the evening of June 8th southwest of Limerick, involved a three-car collision at an intersection. Authorities discovered a deceased man in the back seat of one of the vehicles wearing a balaclava, with a loaded firearm positioned at his feet.

Police identified the deceased as a Swedish man in his 30s who had previously been under investigation for criminal activity in Sweden and was briefly detained in March of this year. Reports indicate the driver of the same vehicle was also Swedish; he fled the scene after the crash, leaving behind a mobile phone that investigators are now using to track him. Authorities believe the man who escaped may have received assistance from his clients to go into hiding, though his current whereabouts remain unknown.

According to media reports, the prevailing police theory is that the pair had been hired to commit a murder linked to an ongoing local conflict and were en route to execute the mission when the collision occurred. Irish Times journalist Conor Lally described the case as one of the most unusual and high-profile gang investigations in recent years, noting that it is extremely rare for foreign gunmen to be hired for such missions within Ireland.

Swedish law enforcement is reportedly assisting in the ongoing investigation. Rebecka Sallroth, the acting head of serious crimes in the Stockholm North police district, stated that the preliminary investigation is being led by Irish authorities and that Swedish police will provide support as necessary. Meanwhile, the Irish police have declined to provide further public comments regarding the details of the case.
