A tragic small plane crash in the Bahamas on Friday has resulted in the deaths of 10 people, including a group of local entertainers. The Bahamas Musicians and Entertainers Union confirmed on Saturday that the victims included a DJ and several musicians, specifically noting members of The Pond Band.
In a statement released on X, the union expressed deep sorrow for the loss, stating, “Among the dearly departed are some of the talented and vibrant members of our entertainment community, including members of The Pond Band and a DJ.” The union further highlighted that the passion and artistry of those lost had significantly contributed to the cultural fabric of the Bahamas.
The Bahamian Aircraft Accident Investigation Authority reported that the aircraft had departed from Lynden Pindling International Airport in Nassau and was en route to San Andros when the fatal crash occurred in North Andros, located in the waters west of the capital. Following the tragedy, the government has moved to temporarily ground all Flamingo Air flights.
The Ministry of Energy, Utilities and Aviation clarified that the suspension of the airline’s air operator certificate is a precautionary measure while officials conduct a thorough investigation into the causes of the crash. This decision follows two separate safety incidents involving the company on Friday.
Minister JoBeth Coleby-Davis provided details on a separate incident during a press conference, explaining that an earlier Flamingo Air flight bound for Mayaguana was forced to turn back to Nassau after the pilot reported a concern. Upon landing and the subsequent deboarding of passengers, that aircraft caught fire. Both Friday incidents are currently under official investigation.
