A tragic traffic accident on a busy highway in Indonesia’s Java island resulted in the deaths of 13 people on Sunday afternoon. The victims, who were traveling in an open-bed pickup truck, were returning home after attending a wedding in Parean village when the collision occurred near the village of Kiajaran Kulon in Indramayu regency.
According to local traffic police chief Undang Syarif Hidayat, the incident began when the pickup truck slowed down and stopped near a median opening to perform a U-turn. A wing-box truck traveling in the same direction struck the vehicle from behind. Hidayat noted that the force of the initial impact pushed the pickup truck into the opposite lane, where it was immediately struck by another oncoming truck. The powerful collision ejected more than a dozen passengers from the pickup onto the highway.
In addition to the 13 fatalities, five other individuals survived the crash and remain hospitalized with injuries ranging from minor to serious. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the incident. Deadly road accidents are a recurring issue in Indonesia, where factors such as overloaded vehicles, insufficient road safety measures, and a general lack of compliance with traffic regulations frequently contribute to fatal crashes.
