The United States Homeland Secretary has indicated that individuals currently residing in the country under temporary humanitarian protections should aim to secure permanent legal status or otherwise prepare for their departure. The remarks were provided during an appearance on the CNN program “State of the Union.”
This guidance from the administration arrives in the wake of a split decision by the Supreme Court issued last week. The ruling allows the administration of President Donald Trump to strip hundreds of thousands of Syrian and Haitian immigrants of their humanitarian protections. This specific status had historically provided these individuals with a safeguard against deportation to their home countries, which remain affected by extreme destitution and active conflict.
