Kemi Badenoch Labels Incoming PM Andy Burnham a People Pleaser

Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch has launched a sharp critique of incoming Prime Minister Andy Burnham, characterizing him as a "people pleaser" with an agenda she describes as "airy fairy." Badenoch suggested that Burnham lacks a clear understanding of the nation's true priorities as he prepares to succeed Sir Keir Starmer on Monday.

Burnham’s transition to the office of prime minister is scheduled to follow a reception with King Charles III. The incoming leader recently addressed the Trade Union Congress headquarters in London on Friday, where he promised to deliver "the most significant change moment in our politics for 40 years." His five-point pledge includes a commitment to cross-party cooperation and the devolution of power from Westminster to local authorities.

Badenoch expressed skepticism regarding these promises, particularly Burnham’s stated goal of ending political point-scoring. She stated, "I will score as many points as possible if it means the right thing for the country. What I'm not going to do is give Andy Burnham a blank cheque." She further emphasized her concern that the new prime minister may struggle to take difficult decisions, stating, "What the country needs right now is someone who can take tough decisions, who can face down the Labour MPs that don't want to do anything difficult. And that is what worries me."

While acknowledging that she has met Burnham before and considers him a "nice guy," Badenoch insisted that the role of prime minister is not a popularity contest. "It is making the lives of all of the people outside this building better. And he has not said what he's going to do. It's all airy-fairy stuff," she added. Badenoch further alleged that Burnham’s debut speech as Labour leader was directed internally at party factions rather than the broader public, suggesting he may be in for a "rude awakening" if he remains unaware of the country's actual needs.

Burnham, who returned to Parliament one month ago following a by-election, secured his position as the sole leadership candidate after receiving backing from 379 Labour MPs and all 11 trade unions affiliated with the party. Despite his upcoming inauguration, he has yet to disclose specific details regarding his cabinet appointments.
