Luis Manuel Otero Alcantara, a prominent Cuban artist and outspoken dissident, has arrived in the United States following his release from prison. His arrival was confirmed on Saturday by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, although specific details regarding the time and location of his entry into the country were not disclosed.

The 38-year-old artist had been serving a five-year prison sentence, which concluded last week. A video documenting his arrival was shared on his official Facebook page, which is managed by his close associates. A statement posted to the page confirmed his release, noting that he had been held in a maximum-security facility. The post further clarified that a mandatory condition of his release was his permanent departure from the island. On Friday, Otero Alcantara was granted a humanitarian visa, facilitating his travel to the US.

Otero Alcantara is a key figure within the San Isidro movement, an organization of intellectuals and artists who advocate for greater freedom of expression within Cuba. He was originally detained in July 2021 while leaving his home to participate in a large-scale protest against power blackouts in Havana. In 2022, a court convicted him on charges of insulting national symbols, contempt, and disturbing the public order, resulting in his five-year incarceration.

Addressing the case, Marco Rubio stated that the artist's only "crime" was his refusal to remain silent and his use of artistic expression to demand basic freedoms that everyday Cubans have been denied for nearly seven decades. Conversely, the Cuban government has maintained that Otero Alcantara was acting on behalf of Washington in an effort to destabilize the communist-run nation.
