A knife attack occurred Tuesday morning near the Acropolis in Athens, leaving two Greek American tourists injured, according to local police. The incident took place in the vicinity of the Acropolis Museum, which is located at the base of the historic Acropolis hill.
Authorities reported that the female victim sustained light injuries to one of her legs, while the male victim suffered more serious wounds to his arm. Both individuals were transported to a hospital by ambulance for treatment.
Police have successfully detained the assailant. While the suspect's identity remains officially unclear, investigators stated that he appeared to be struggling with psychological issues.
Violent street attacks of this nature are considered rare in Greece. The incident occurred near the site of the nearly 2,500-year-old Parthenon temple, a major global landmark that saw approximately 4.6 million visitors last year. In a separate incident this past April, an 89-year-old man was arrested after allegedly opening fire with a shotgun at a courthouse and a social security office in central Athens, wounding at least four people in connection with social security grievances.
