Trump Used Older Air Force One After Credible Iranian Threat

President Trump departed from a recent NATO summit in Turkey using the older Air Force One aircraft rather than the newer Boeing 747-8 jet donated by Qatar. This decision followed the detection of a credible threat from Iran and its allied proxy groups, according to U.S. officials. Intelligence indicated a specific plot to fire a missile at the president's plane, prompting the U.S. Secret Service to implement a backup security strategy. The news of these threats from Iranian proxies was first reported by The New York Times.

The president had originally arrived in the Turkish capital of Ankara aboard the newer, $400 million Qatari-donated plane, which the U.S. accepted as a gift last year and spent months retrofitting to prepare for presidential use. Following the conclusion of the summit, the president traveled from Ankara to the United Kingdom on the older aircraft before switching back to the newer jet to complete his return journey to the United States. The older fleet is equipped with advanced defensive technology, including laser systems designed to blind or misdirect incoming missiles, as well as other diversionary measures. It remains unclear what specific defensive systems are installed on the newer Qatari-gifted aircraft.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that the president will continue to utilize the older plane while the new 747 receives additional upgrades scheduled for the fall. She stated that the newer aircraft is safe for travel but will undergo approximately one month of enhancements. President Trump noted that while the new plane already possesses significant capabilities, it will be fully optimized over the coming month.

The administration has faced questions regarding the security of the newer jet, though officials previously indicated the switch was a precautionary measure amid the ongoing U.S.-Iran war. The president has openly acknowledged the potential for Iranian threats to his safety. Earlier this month, he wrote on Truth Social that 1,000 missiles were "Locked and Loaded" for immediate use if Iran attempts to assassinate him. He further warned that the U.S. military is ready, willing, and able to completely decimate and destroy all areas of Iran for a one-year period, subject to extension.
