Sleep is increasingly recognized as a fundamental pillar of health, with inadequate rest linked to obesity, depression, cardiovascular disease, and diminished productivity. As urban centers seek strategies to bolster resident wellbeing, researchers are investigating whether specific features of the built environment can facilitate better sleep.
A new study led by researchers at Osaka Metropolitan University in Japan has identified a connection between neighborhood characteristics and sleep duration. By analyzing over 200,000 Google Street View images using artificial intelligence, the team evaluated the visual environment of Tokyo neighborhoods. These findings were subsequently linked to self-reported sleep data from 1,089 employed adults aged 40 to 59 who reside on the third floor or below in apartment buildings.
The research indicates that neighborhoods featuring greater visual enclosure, such as streets framed by trees or buildings, are associated with longer sleep and a reduction in insomnia symptoms. Conversely, the study found that neighborhoods characterized by pedestrian-friendly street layouts were associated with shorter sleep durations. The authors suggest that this relationship is partly explained by how these environments influence residents' perceptions of safety and liveliness.
The research team noted that their results reinforce a significant positive association between perceived safety and sleep duration. Greener neighborhoods were consistently linked to higher feelings of safety, which in turn contributed to longer sleep. In contrast, those areas with more pedestrian-friendly designs were linked to lower perceived safety and subsequently shorter sleep.
According to the study authors, these findings broaden the current understanding of how urban environments impact sleep health. They identify practical indicators that may inform future urban planning interventions and research aimed at fostering healthier cities for residents.
