The Pittsburgh Steelers have officially responded to comments made by quarterback Aaron Rodgers regarding Dr. Anthony Fauci and the network ESPN during his recent appearance on The Pat McAfee Show. The show was broadcast live from the Steelers' training camp on Monday, August 3, featuring an extended interview with the four-time MVP as he prepares for what he has stated will be his final NFL season.
Addressing the controversy, Steelers spokesman Burt Lauten noted that the organization recognizes the diverse perspectives within its team. Lauten stated that discussions concerning culture and politics can involve differing views, adding that players are entitled to their own personal opinions. He further expressed certainty that there exists a variety of viewpoints on numerous topics within the Steelers' locker room.
During the interview, Rodgers directed sharp criticism toward Dr. Anthony Fauci. When asked about his mindset for the upcoming season, Rodgers jokingly remarked that he would plead the Fifth, explicitly calling Fauci a coward. This comment was a reference to the congressional hearing held on Wednesday, July 29, where Fauci invoked his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination more than 100 times. Rodgers, who previously drew scrutiny for his statements regarding his COVID-19 vaccination status in 2021, has maintained a long-standing position of criticism toward Fauci and the federal government's pandemic response. His verbal critique of the former official spanned more than two minutes.
Rodgers also shifted his focus to ESPN, the network that licenses and airs The Pat McAfee Show. He questioned the network's editorial judgment regarding its coverage of offseason drama involving New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel and former NFL reporter Dianna Russini, asking why the network had not addressed the situation more openly.
On Tuesday, Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy was asked by reporters to comment on the quarterback's outburst. McCarthy emphasized that his players are grown men with individual opinions. He stated that his primary responsibility is to maintain the focus on football and winning, noting that the team has a functional player council and a productive locker room environment.
"I'm gonna plead the Fifth," Rodgers said. "Like that absolute coward Tony Fauci. Absolute coward. Are you kidding me?"
“These are grown men. They all have different opinions. There’s no question about that,” McCarthy told reporters. “But at the end of the day, my job is to keep it about football, keep the focus on winning. That’s why we’re here. We have a good locker room. We have a player council that’s in place. We had our second meeting yesterday. We’re in a good spot.”
