China reported a significant advancement in its space program on Friday, successfully recovering the first stage of a carrier rocket during an orbital launch test. The mission involved the Long March 10B rocket, which lifted off from Hainan island in southern China. State broadcaster CCTV reported that approximately six minutes after the separation of the upper stage, the first-stage booster executed a controlled return, landing vertically on a floating platform.
Video footage shared by a CCTV-affiliated social media account captured the booster smoking as it descended to the platform. In addition to the landing test, the mission successfully placed a satellite into orbit. This accomplishment brings China closer to the reusable launch capabilities currently dominated by American companies like SpaceX, which mastered booster recovery nearly a decade ago.
The state-owned China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation, which designed the Long March 10 series, hailed the event as a historic breakthrough that provides a foundation for enhancing the nation’s space access. The Long March 10 family is considered essential to Beijing’s long-term goals, including plans for crewed lunar missions.
This success follows several recent failed attempts by various players in China’s growing commercial space sector, which is being encouraged by Beijing to bolster the nation’s status as a leading aerospace power. The development of reusable technology is viewed as a strategic priority, as it can drastically reduce launch costs and turnaround times, while also serving as a critical asset for satellite infrastructure and national defense.
The achievement places China in a more competitive position globally, narrowing the gap with US firms. While SpaceX remains the market leader, other American competitors like Blue Origin have also made strides, with the latter completing its first successful first-stage landing of a New Glenn rocket last November.
Developing reusable technology can significantly lower the cost and turn-around time of rocket launches. It can also provide nations a strategic advantage as space increasingly becomes a domain linked to military power and defense capabilities on Earth.
