A violent incident unfolded during a Fourth of July celebration near New York’s Coney Island beach, leaving eight people wounded after shots were fired at a family cookout. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed on Sunday that the victims included four children, ranging in age from 6 to 14 years old.

The shooting took place on Saturday night within the courtyard of an apartment complex. The location is situated roughly one block away from the famous Coney Island boardwalk and is in close proximity to the site where the Nathan’s Famous hot dog eating contest was held earlier that same holiday.

According to Commissioner Tisch, a suspect wearing a black mask opened fire into the courtyard where the family had gathered for their holiday gathering. Authorities noted that there were no reports of any earlier disturbances at the gathering, she said. While the shooter managed to flee the scene, police were able to recover a weapon.

Regarding the condition of those injured, officials reported that a 21-year-old woman is currently in critical condition. The other 7 victims, including the 4 children aged 6, 7, 12, and 14, are reported to be in stable condition and are expected to survive their injuries.
