England football star Harry Kane has officially confirmed reports that he played a round of golf with U.S. President Donald Trump. Speaking during a press conference in Miami on Friday, July 10, ahead of England’s upcoming World Cup quarterfinal match against Norway, Kane noted that the outing took place approximately 18 months ago, likely at Trump’s International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida.
The confirmation follows comments made earlier in the week by President Trump, who praised the footballer, stating, “I think Kane is a great player. I played golf with him and I like him a lot. He’s a good golfer.”
Reflecting on the invitation, Kane described the event as a unique and somewhat surreal experience. “I played all right to be honest,” Kane said. “We played about 18 months ago. He invited me to play when I was down in Palm Beach. So when the president invites you somewhere… It was a pretty surreal experience just to meet him, and to play golf with him.”
Kane also complimented the President’s skills on the course, adding, “His golf is pretty good, to be honest. I hope I can play golf as well as him when I’m his age, that’s for sure. So, (it was) a unique experience. I’m just grateful he invited me down to play.”
The England striker has been in strong form during the tournament, netting six goals so far to help lead his team to a quarterfinal showdown against Norway at Hard Rock Stadium this Saturday.
In separate tournament developments, President Trump had previously reached out to FIFA president Gianni Infantino regarding U.S. men’s national team striker Folarin Balogun. Trump attempted to intervene in a one-game suspension handed to Balogun for a red card. While Infantino maintained that the call did not influence FIFA’s ruling, the suspension was ultimately converted to a suspended sentence. This allowed Balogun to participate in the round of 16 against Belgium, though the U.S. team was subsequently eliminated following a 4-1 defeat on Monday, July 6.
