A deadly blast occurred at a restaurant on Kudrinskaya Square in central Moscow on Saturday night, resulting in the deaths of at least three people. Russian authorities reported that the explosion took place shortly before 8 p.m. local time, or 5 p.m. UTC.
According to Russia's Anti-Terrorism Committee, the incident began when a woman carrying a homemade explosive device attempted to enter the establishment. A security guard at the scene intervened and stopped the woman at the entrance. The device subsequently detonated, killing the woman, the security guard, and a patron who was at the restaurant.
State news agency RIA Novosti indicated that at least 21 other individuals sustained injuries in the explosion. While the restaurant was closed for a private event on Saturday, the area was quickly surrounded by heavily armed law enforcement officers who sealed off the site to begin an investigation.
Authorities have not yet released the identities of those involved in the attack, nor have they confirmed who might be responsible. Russia has experienced a series of attacks since the conflict in Ukraine began in 2022, with officials frequently attributing various attempted killings and assassinations to Kyiv.
