Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi departed on Saturday, June 27, for an official two-day visit to the archipelago of Seychelles. This diplomatic trip is aimed at bolstering relations with a key partner in the Indian Ocean, as New Delhi seeks to strengthen maritime, security, and economic cooperation with the island nation. The visit comes at the specific invitation of Seychelles President Patrick Herminie, with Modi serving as the Guest of Honor for the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the country’s National Day.

India’s diplomatic history with Seychelles is significant, as the two nations are marking 50 years of ties. These relations were established shortly after the East African nation gained its independence on June 29, 1976. Reflecting on the importance of the trip, Modi shared his perspective on the social media platform X prior to his departure. He described Seychelles as a highly valued maritime neighbor and a central partner in India’s Vision MAHASAGAR, which stands for the Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions. He noted that the partnership is vital for advancing the interests of the Global South, especially as India continues to compete for strategic influence in the Indian Ocean against its geopolitical rival, China.

The schedule for the visit includes comprehensive bilateral talks between Prime Minister Modi and President Herminie, during which the leaders will discuss the full spectrum of cooperation between the two nations. Furthermore, the Indian Prime Minister is expected to deliver an address before the National Assembly of Seychelles. This trip follows Modi’s last visit to the archipelago, which occurred in 2015. To demonstrate the depth of this partnership, a special contingent of the Indian defense forces, along with two Indian Navy ships, will be participating in the jubilee celebrations.

The Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi stated earlier this week that the visit serves to reaffirm the strong and enduring friendship between India and Seychelles. It is also designed to reinforce the shared commitment of both countries to enhance their bilateral relationship across all sectors. This trip occurs within a busy diplomatic calendar for the Indian leader, as upon his return to India, Prime Minister Modi is set to host Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi for an upcoming bilateral summit.
