A dangerous and intense heat wave has severely disrupted Independence Day festivities across the United States, casting a shadow over the nation’s preparations for its 250th birthday. As searing temperatures continue to scorch the eastern region of the country, local authorities have been forced to cancel or postpone dozens of scheduled parades, concerts, and fireworks displays.

The National Weather Service has issued warnings for the holiday period, noting that numerous daily temperature records are expected to be broken. In some areas, residents may face consecutive-day, monthly, or even all-time heat records, with peak heat indices potentially climbing as high as 115 degrees Fahrenheit (46 degrees Celsius).

In Washington, DC, the Great American State Fair on the National Mall—a flagship event intended to commemorate the country’s 250th anniversary of independence from Great Britain—was temporarily shuttered on Friday afternoon. The closure occurred as local temperatures soared to 101 degrees Fahrenheit. Similar disruptions were reported in at least seven states across the country.

Philadelphia also faced the impact of the extreme weather, where the city’s Salute to Independence parade was officially called off. This decision followed a Thursday temperature reading of 103 degrees Fahrenheit, which tied a record high for the city that had previously stood since 1901. The ongoing heat wave continues to pose a significant challenge for communities across the nation as they attempt to mark the historic milestone this Saturday.
