Following the American War of Independence against British colonial rule, the US army underwent a significant transformation. A central figure in this effort was the Prussian officer Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben, who played a leading role in reshaping and professionalizing the battle-scarred forces during the post-war years.
Historical records, notably in the form of a painting, capture this era by depicting the future first president, George Washington, standing alongside von Steuben and other military officers. Washington is positioned at the far left of the scene, with von Steuben placed third from the left among the 250 figures represented in the broader historical context of the era’s military leadership.
The impact of von Steuben’s service remains a part of American tradition. Since 1957, the city of New York has consistently honored the Prussian officer’s contributions to the nation’s military history with an annual parade.
