Ukraine’s prosecutor general has formally denied that the country played any role in the 2022 explosions that crippled the Nord Stream gas pipelines. The official statement, released on Thursday, asserted that investigations conducted by Kyiv have found no evidence linking the state, its official entities, or individual officials to the sabotage.
This denial comes as German prosecutors pursue a legal case against a former Ukrainian soldier, identified as Serhii K., who is currently facing trial in Germany. He is charged as a co-perpetrator of a war crime for allegedly masterminding the blasts. Berlin believes the operation was ordered by unspecified Ukrainian state entities, though the defendant has denied all charges against him. Serhii K. was arrested in Italy last summer and subsequently transferred to German custody in November.
German prosecutors allege that the suspect collaborated with other Ukrainian military personnel to plan and execute the attack while he was an active army officer. According to their theory, the objective was to permanently disrupt gas deliveries and undermine Russia’s ability to finance its war efforts. The Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines, which were designed to transport Russian gas to Europe, were rendered inoperable in September 2022, several months after Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
While rejecting the allegations, the Ukrainian prosecutor general’s office emphasized that its own investigation into the circumstances remains ongoing and that officials are still gathering and examining evidence. To facilitate transparency, Kyiv has proposed the creation of a joint investigation team with Berlin. The prosecutor general’s office reaffirmed that it continues to cooperate with German authorities, stating that Ukraine remains prepared to help clarify all facts regarding the case.
