A severe wildfire in the southern Spanish region of Almeria has claimed at least 12 lives, according to authorities. The tragedy unfolded as a scorching heat wave spread across the region, creating dangerous conditions that have triggered orange weather alerts—the second-highest level of warning indicating significant risk.
The regional government of Andalusia confirmed on Friday morning that six bodies were discovered in the hamlet of Bedar by late Thursday evening, with some victims found trapped inside their vehicles. An additional six bodies were located in Los Gallardos shortly thereafter. Antonio Sanz, the Andalusian Minister of the Presidency, Health, and Emergencies, described the event as an unprecedented tragedy, stating that the hearts of all Andalusians are in mourning.
In response to the crisis, Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez expressed his deep sadness over the loss of life in a post on social media. Officials have mobilized approximately 150 personnel from the military emergency unit to support an existing force of 150 firefighters. The emergency response effort is equipped with five fire trucks, medical units, and fire suppression technicians. Minister Sanz has urged residents to prioritize their safety by avoiding impacted areas and following designated escape routes.
Several neighborhoods, including Almocaizar, Fuente del Albarico, Los Pinos, La Serena, and El Pinar, have been evacuated. Earlier, witnesses told authorities that the blaze may have started after a power line fell, igniting the dry vegetation. Medical teams are also treating other residents for minor burns and respiratory complications caused by smoke inhalation.
The extreme temperatures have significantly dried out vegetation, heightening the risk of forest fires. Prime Minister Sanchez had previously announced in May that Spain would launch its largest-ever wildfire response this year. This latest incident follows a record-breaking year in 2025, during which the European Forest Fire Information System reported that over 393,000 hectares burned across the country.
