Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the former emir who steered Qatar’s evolution from a modest Gulf state into a prominent global player, has passed away at the age of 74. The death was confirmed on Sunday morning by the Amiri Diwan, the nation’s highest government body.

Born in 1952 into the Al Thani family, which has maintained rule over Qatar since the mid-19th century, Sheikh Hamad’s path to leadership included training at the United Kingdom’s Sandhurst military academy. He eventually served as the commander of Qatar’s armed forces and as defense minister before being appointed crown prince in the late 1970s. In 1995, he ascended to power following a bloodless coup that deposed his father while the latter was traveling abroad.

During his tenure, which lasted until 2013, Sheikh Hamad oversaw a massive transformation of the country. By leveraging vast natural gas reserves, he positioned Qatar as one of the world’s leading producers and exporters of liquefied natural gas (LNG), helping the nation achieve one of the highest GDPs per capita globally. His reign also saw the establishment of the Al Jazeera news network, the expansion of Qatar Airways into an international carrier, and the development of Doha into a major global transport hub.

Sheikh Hamad was also a central figure in Qatar’s successful bid to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup. His influence extended beyond economic and sporting achievements; under his leadership, the nation initiated significant financial support for projects in the Gaza Strip, including the funding of a hospital that bears his name.

In 2013, Sheikh Hamad became one of the first leaders in the modern Arab world to voluntarily step down, transferring power to his son, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, who was 33 at the time. Reflecting on the transition, he expressed a vision for a new era, stating, “The future lies ahead of you, the children of this homeland, as you usher into a new era where young leadership hoists the banner.”
