A devastating fire ripped through a crowded beer house in Thailand’s capital, Bangkok, late Sunday night, killing at least 27 people and injuring 63 others. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul confirmed the death toll to local media, stating that 27 lifeless bodies were removed from the scene.

The blaze, which was first reported around midnight, occurred in a packed establishment located in the Ladprao area of the Chatuchak district. City governor Chadchart Sittipunt informed reporters that among the 63 injured, 22 are currently in critical condition.

Witnesses reported that the fire originated near the stage area. Survivors recounted to Prime Minister Anutin that the pub rapidly filled with smoke, forcing many to attempt to flee towards the back of the venue. Tragically, there were no fire escapes, and many victims were discovered in the restrooms, according to Anutin.

Footage shared online depicted a huge blaze raging with plumes of thick black smoke billowing from the front door of the pub as people desperately tried to escape. Another city official noted that the fire had already burned through the entire establishment by the time rescuers arrived. Firefighters managed to bring the inferno under control after approximately half an an hour.

Photos from the aftermath revealed a scene of destruction, with charred tables and chairs and significant damage to the pub’s interior. The Chatuchak district, particularly its market, is known for attracting tens of thousands of local and international tourists on weekends.

This incident recalls previous bar tragedies in Thailand. Notably, a New Year’s Eve celebration at the Santika nightclub in Bangkok on January 1, 2009, resulted in 66 deaths and over 200 injuries. That particular blaze was reportedly sparked by an indoor fireworks display.

"Twenty-seven bodies were moved out, lifeless bodies. Some were sent to hospitals, we are checking their conditions," Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said in televised remarks from the scene of the blaze.
