The United States military has launched a fresh round of strikes against Iran, marking the 10th consecutive night of operations intended to further degrade the country's capabilities to attack ships in the Strait of Hormuz. These military actions follow a vow from US President Donald Trump to punish Iran for the deaths of three US soldiers. President Trump previously stated that Iran had been hit "very hard" in honor of the three service members, two of whom were killed in Jordan and one in Iraq.
On Tuesday night, the Department of Defense confirmed the identities of two of the soldiers killed during an Iranian strike on the Muwaffaq Salti base in Jordan over the weekend: 19-year-old Pte Isabella Gonzales from Texas and 25-year-old Lt Tyler James Feehan from Hawaii. US Central Command (Centcom) had previously reported that a third service member went missing in action following the attack, and unidentified remains were later discovered in the area.
Regional tensions have expanded beyond the immediate conflict zone. Jordan's military reported late on Monday that it had shot down three Iranian missiles as sirens sounded across the country. Earlier that day, Kuwait's armed forces stated they had intercepted Iranian drones, while Bahrain reported that Iranian-launched drones targeted its air navigation systems, though traffic in the country remained unaffected.
The situation in the Strait of Hormuz remains complex. While Centcom stated that commercial vessels continue to pass through the vital waterway, Iranian state media reported that two oil tankers exploded while attempting to transit the strait. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed the tankers were navigating an "unsafe and hazardous southern route" when they "exploded and were brought to a halt." Centcom has disputed these claims. Separately, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations agency (UKMTO) reported that a tanker in the strait was struck by an unknown projectile, forcing its crew to abandon the vessel and board a lifeboat. It remains unclear if this vessel is among those cited by Iranian authorities, who claimed rescue teams were removing crews from the two tankers it reported as struck.
Despite the collapse of a ceasefire, Tehran indicated that diplomatic messages are still being exchanged through intermediaries. Meanwhile, Iranian state media reported that several cities were hit during the previous night's US strikes, including Tabriz, Chabahar, Konarak, Bandar Mahshahr, and Bandar Imam Khomeini.
