As Europe prepares for another intense heat wave, wildfires are raging across the continent, with 2026 already seeing more land burned than the annual average observed over the past two decades. Thousands of people have been forced from their homes as authorities struggle to contain forest fires in several countries.
In France, officials ordered the evacuation of 7,000 residents on Thursday as a precautionary measure north of Cap Ferret, near the popular tourist destination of Arcachon Bay. This latest directive brings the total number of people evacuated in the region to 12,000. By Wednesday, authorities reported that approximately 2,000 hectares, or nearly 5,000 acres, had been consumed by the flames. The situation remains perilous; earlier on Tuesday, two firefighters lost their lives while battling a blaze near Bordeaux airport.
Across the border in Spain, authorities issued evacuation orders for multiple districts surrounding Toledo, situated south of Madrid, on Wednesday. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez traveled to a fire-affected area in Guadalajara, northeast of Madrid, where more than 30 villages have been evacuated. During his visit, Sanchez emphasized the connection between environmental conditions and the destruction, stating, "Year after year we clearly see how climate change kills and destroys wealth in our communities. This isn't politics. It is science, it's about facts."
Italy is also facing significant challenges, with around 6,000 firefighters, forest guards, and civil protection personnel deployed across Sicily to combat fires that have been burning for days. Regional president Renato Schifani reported that about 50 fires remain active despite the use of water-bombing aircraft. Meanwhile, on the Italian mainland in Calabria, more than 160 fires have been recorded. Local officials there have raised concerns about arson, alleging that "malicious individuals" are intentionally spreading the fires by attaching flammable-soaked rags to the tails of stray cats.
