A comprehensive study released by US News during the week of July 27 has ranked all 50 states from best to worst for 2026. The findings are based on an analysis of 71 distinct metrics categorized into eight key areas: education, health care, economy, infrastructure, opportunity, fiscal stability, natural environment, and crime and corrections.
To ensure a balanced assessment, US News weighted certain categories more heavily than others, with health care and education receiving more significance than natural environment and crime and corrections. Within this framework, each state was assigned a score out of 100, where 100 represented the top performance and zero marked the lowest. In addition to these quantitative metrics, the researchers incorporated feedback from more than 56,000 people surveyed across the United States between 2018 and 2025 regarding their satisfaction with their home state's performance.
Utah secured the top position in the overall rankings. The state performed strongly in several areas, including No. 2 for economy and fiscal stability, No. 4 for infrastructure, No. 6 for education, and No. 7 for crime and corrections. It ranked No. 18 for health care and No. 24 for opportunity, though it placed No. 48 for natural environment. Joining Utah in the top five best-ranked states were South Dakota, Minnesota, North Dakota, and Nebraska.
At the opposite end of the spectrum, Louisiana was ranked No. 50. The state's performance breakdown included a ranking of No. 50 for crime and corrections, No. 49 for economy and natural environment, No. 46 for education and infrastructure, and No. 45 for health care and opportunity. Its highest category placement was No. 43 for fiscal stability. Other states rounding out the bottom of the rankings included Arkansas, Michigan, New Mexico, Mississippi, and Alaska.
