A suicide bomber struck a demonstration against militancy in the city of Kabal, located in Pakistan’s northwestern Swat Valley, killing 14 people and leaving dozens more injured. The attack occurred outside a local police station as hundreds of citizens gathered to protest a resurgence of militant violence and express their dissatisfaction with the government's perceived inability to ensure public safety.
Among those killed in the explosion were five police officers. According to a local police official, the bomber detonated his explosives when he was stopped for a search in front of the police station. The rally had been organized by residents demanding a life free from the fear of violence, with speakers criticizing authorities for failing to take decisive action against militants operating in the region.
Video footage shared on social media captured the moment of the blast, showing a speaker mid-sentence before the explosion triggered widespread panic among the crowd. No group has claimed responsibility for the bombing as of yet. The area, known for its history of conflict, was previously the home of Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai, who was targeted by a Taliban gunman there in 2012.
The Swat Valley was a stronghold for the Taliban between 2007 and 2009 until the Pakistani military successfully drove the group out and restored government control. However, religious militants have recently resurfaced, with the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) proving particularly active. While the TTP is a separate entity from the Taliban rulers in neighboring Afghanistan, it maintains an alliance with them, a situation that continues to fuel diplomatic tensions between the two countries.
Pakistan has recently witnessed a surge in militant attacks, many of which have specifically targeted security forces and police. The government has vowed to continue its operations against the TTP and its support networks, accusing them of carrying out attacks with the backing of Afghan Taliban leadership. In the wake of the Kabal attack, President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif both issued condemnations. President Zardari stated that terrorists would never succeed in their efforts to undermine national unity, peace, and the authority of the state.
