Berlin Police Use Water Cannons to Provide Heatwave Relief

In an unexpected move to combat the sweltering conditions, Berlin police deployed two water cannons to provide relief to the public. Unlike the forceful jets typically used during demonstrations, these sprayers were adjusted to be much gentler, offering a refreshing mist to those suffering in the city’s extreme heat.

These water-spraying vehicles traveled throughout the capital, much to the appreciation of both tourists and local residents. The operations targeted high-traffic areas, including the Brandenburg Gate, the Reichstag building, and Potsdamer Platz, where demand for any form of cooling has been exceptionally high.

Germany has remained caught in a severe heatwave for several days, with temperatures climbing toward or even surpassing 40 degrees Celsius. The situation has been exacerbated by a lack of relief overnight, as temperatures have struggled to drop, leading to persistent heat levels throughout the day and night.

Provisional data from the German Weather Service indicates that the most recent night was the warmest ever recorded in the country. In the eastern town of Kubschütz, located in Saxony, temperatures remained at 29.4 degrees Celsius throughout the night. Meanwhile, a peak daytime temperature of 41.5 degrees was recorded in Möckern-Drewitz, Saxony-Anhalt, on Saturday at 16:20.

Meteorologists expect Sunday to be the apex of this heatwave, with the German Weather Service forecasting highs between 37 and 41 degrees. There is also a risk of localized thunderstorms throughout Sunday and into Monday, which may bring hail, heavy rain, and intense wind gusts.

Some respite is expected heading into Monday night, with temperatures forecasted to drop to between 19 and 23 degrees. The cooling trend will continue into Monday, when daytime highs are expected to reach a more manageable 27 to 31 degrees, accompanied by periods of rainfall and scattered thunderstorms.
