Greek police have successfully resolved the investigation into the death of a 38-year-old British woman whose body was discovered inside a suitcase within an abandoned building in the Kypseli district of Athens last July. A 26-year-old Afghan national has been identified as the primary suspect and is now facing formal charges of homicide, robbery, and weapons offenses. Authorities report that the suspect has confessed to several of his actions during questioning.
The case was initially managed by the Department of Crimes against Life and Personal Freedom, which operates under the Sub-Directorate for the Investigation of Crimes against Life and Property within the Directorate for Combating Organised Crime (DAOE). During the preliminary phase of the investigation, specialist officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations processed the scene and performed biological testing on the remains. Despite the body being in an advanced state of decomposition due to environmental conditions, forensic teams successfully recovered usable fingerprints from the victim.
To confirm the identity of the deceased, the Hellenic Police Headquarters utilized the Interpol Division of the Directorate of International Police Cooperation to request information from international partners. United States authorities subsequently confirmed that the fingerprints matched a 38-year-old British national. Investigations revealed the victim to be Elisabeth-Jane Ross, a Scottish woman who had arrived in Greece on June 26. She stayed at a friend’s residence in the Piraeus area until July 10, when she departed for an unknown location in the wider Attica region.
Following an extensive investigation that utilized collected evidence and digital analysis of video footage, the Department of Crimes against Life and Personal Freedom determined the 26-year-old suspect's involvement. He was detained for questioning on Thursday at the DAOE headquarters, where he admitted to placing the victim's body in a suitcase and transporting it to the abandoned site. Furthermore, investigators found that he had used the victim's bank cards to withdraw cash in the days after her death. A search of the suspect's residence resulted in the seizure of a knife and a replica pistol, leading to additional charges related to weapons violations.
The investigation was conducted in close cooperation with Police Scotland and a liaison officer from the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA). The suspect has since been presented before the relevant prosecutor's office.
