Belgium is set to implement a new road tax system covering all motorists, including those traveling through the country. The decision, announced by the nation’s three regions on Friday, marks a significant shift for a country that has historically allowed highway travel without direct user charges, despite years of public debate over the issue.

The new policy is scheduled to take effect on May 1, 2027. Under these regulations, all drivers will be required to register their vehicles and pay the designated road tax. Authorities have confirmed that options such as day passes will be available for those who are only passing through the country.

Francois Desquesnes, the transport minister for the Wallonia region, emphasized the necessity of the measure, stating that everyone who utilizes the road network must contribute fairly to the ongoing maintenance of the infrastructure.

Regarding the pricing structure, annual passes are set at €90 ($103) for zero-emission vehicles, while the cost for higher-polluting vehicles will reach up to €125. To ensure compliance, the government will utilize road cameras to monitor traffic. Drivers caught operating vehicles without a valid pass will face a fine of €70.
