The Los Angeles Dodgers have significantly bolstered their pitching rotation by acquiring Tarik Skubal from the Detroit Tigers. In exchange, the Tigers are receiving outfielder Zyhir Hope along with right-handed pitchers River Ryan and Brady Smith. Skubal, 29, joins a star-studded Dodgers staff that already features Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Blake Snell, Justin Wrobleski, Tyler Glasnow, and Shohei Ohtani.
Skubal is set to become a free agent following the conclusion of this season. While he is expected to command a record-setting salary that the Tigers were reportedly unwilling to meet, the Dodgers will now cover the remaining $9 million of his $32 million salary for the current season. This salary already established a record for an arbitration-eligible pitcher.
Despite missing 45 days earlier this year due to elbow surgery, Skubal has returned to elite form. In six starts since his return, he has recorded a 1.95 ERA with 50 strikeouts and just six walks. His performance mirrors his dominance from the previous two seasons, during which he maintained a 2.30 ERA over 62 starts and struck out 10.9 batters per nine innings, earning two Cy Young Awards, including a unanimous selection.
The Dodgers gain a pitcher with a proven track record in the postseason. Skubal was instrumental in leading the Tigers to a wild-card berth in 2024, highlighted by an upset victory over the Houston Astros where he tossed six shutout innings. Over the past two postseasons, he has compiled a 2.04 ERA with 56 strikeouts in 39⅔ innings.
For the Tigers, the trade effectively signals the end of an "all-in" season. The team had previously signed left-hander Framber Valdez as a long-term, more affordable alternative to Skubal, though they had hoped to utilize both pitchers throughout 2026. Those aspirations were hampered when Skubal required surgery to remove loose bodies in his elbow. Although an innovative surgical technique allowed for a faster recovery, the team suffered a difficult stretch in May, losing 16 of 18 games. Manager A.J. Hinch described the period as "playing Game 7 every night" in an attempt to remain competitive.
The Tigers briefly rallied by winning 15 of 20 games between June 29 and July 24, with Skubal delivering a dominant performance against Kansas City in the final game of that run. This surge placed them within five games of the AL Central lead and 2½ games of a wild-card spot with eight games remaining before the trade deadline. However, the momentum stalled after the team dropped two games to the Kansas City Royals and two of three to the Baltimore Orioles, including a loss where a 7-0 lead was surrendered after Skubal had exited the game with a 7-1 advantage.
