The highly anticipated exhibition, “Fragile Beauty: Photographs from the Sir Elton John and David Furnish Collection,” has officially opened its doors at the Jeu de Paume arts centre in Paris. Following a successful debut at London's Victoria and Albert Museum, the show presents more than 300 photographs carefully chosen from the 7,000 works that Sir Elton John and David Furnish have gathered over 30 years.
Critics have lauded the exhibition as a journey through time, illustrating the evolution of photography from the 1950s to the present day. Sir Elton John initiated his photography collection in 1991, drawn to the medium's unique capacity for capturing reality with profound honesty.
“I love painters, I love artwork, I collect paintings, but for me nothing speaks the truth more like a photograph – and David Hockney would kill me for saying that but I’m sorry, I’m right,” Sir Elton stated during the exhibition’s initial presentation in London.
This passion for photography quickly became a shared interest with his husband, David Furnish. Furnish recounted, “When Elton and I met, the first night down here in Windsor, one of the things we immediately found we had in common was our love of photography. I had the coffee table books of the photographs and Elton actually had some of the photographs.”
Produced by the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Paris exhibition delves into photography through five distinct themes: desire, celebrity, fashion, reportage, and the affirmation of identity. It highlights how images serve as powerful tools for documenting both private lives and broader social and political transformations.
The collection also features significant historical moments and iconic portraits, including those of Marilyn Monroe, Doris Day, and jazz legend Chet Baker. It traces pivotal events such as the Civil Rights movement, the emergence of LGBTQ+ communities, AIDS activism, and various political protests. More contemporary pieces include Associated Press photographer Ethan Swope's striking images of the devastating Los Angeles wildfires in 2025, collectively demonstrating photography's ongoing role in capturing the defining moments of our era.
While Sir Elton John's renowned name may attract many visitors, “Fragile Beauty” ultimately serves as a profound celebration of photography itself. The exhibition underscores the medium's inherent ability to convey vulnerability, desire, resilience, and identity, all while chronicling the individuals and events that have shaped the modern world.
The Jeu de Paume, situated in the Tuileries Gardens in central Paris, is one of France's foremost institutions dedicated to photography and the moving image.
