Vice-President JD Vance and his wife, second lady Usha Vance, announced on Sunday the birth of their fourth child, Alec Neel Vance. The arrival of the baby boy marks the first time a child has been born to a sitting United States vice-president in more than 150 years.
In a statement released on social media, the couple expressed their excitement, confirming that both mother and baby are healthy. They also noted that their older children—nine-year-old Ewan, six-year-old Vivek, and four-year-old Mirabel—are happy to welcome their new brother. The couple extended their gratitude to the medical staff at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and the White House medical team.
The birth of Alec Neel Vance is a rare event in American political history. According to the White House Historical Association, the last sitting vice-president to welcome a child was Schuyler Colfax in 1870, when he and his wife, Ellen Wade Colfax, had a son named Schuyler Colfax III. Before that, John C. Calhoun and his wife, Floride Bonneau Calhoun, welcomed a son, William, in 1829 during Calhoun’s time in office.
Vance, 41, has frequently emphasized the importance of family and has been a vocal advocate for increasing birth rates in the United States. During his 2021 Senate campaign in Ohio and his subsequent work as vice-president, he has expressed concerns regarding national birth rate declines. At the 2025 March for Life rally in Washington, he reiterated his stance, stating, “I want more babies in the United States of America.” He has also mentioned that the 2025 death of his friend, conservative activist Charlie Kirk, influenced his and Usha’s decision to have another child.
Usha Vance, 40, has been a frequent presence on the campaign trail and in official capacities, often traveling with their children on Air Force Two. Her pregnancy, which was made public in January, drew significant media attention. Recently, she also faced public commentary regarding her fashion choices, specifically a maternity dress worn during a video podcast episode.
The newest addition to the Vance family comes amid a broader trend of births among members of the Trump administration, including children born to the families of White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller and press secretary Karoline Leavitt.
