In his first public interview since announcing his resignation last month, outgoing British Prime Minister Keir Starmer described the decision to step down as an “intensely personal” one. Starmer, who will continue to hold the office until his Labour Party formally names a successor, acknowledged the difficulty of the situation during his conversation with the BBC. He explained that he spent significant time deliberating over what would be the best course of action for himself, his government, and the country at large.
As he prepares to depart Downing Street, Starmer offered a pointed warning to his likely successor, former Greater Manchester mayor and recently elected Makerfield MP Andy Burnham. Addressing the complexities of modern governance, Starmer emphasized that the next prime minister must remain deeply engaged in diplomacy and international affairs. He specifically highlighted the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and Iran as critical factors impacting the domestic cost of living and household financial stability across the United Kingdom.
“If you’re prime minister and you care what bills are going to be like in any household around the country, you have to care about finding a lasting solution to the situation in Ukraine. You have to care about what happens in the strait of Hormuz,” Starmer stated. Throughout his premiership, Starmer faced criticism from some observers who dubbed him “never here Keir,” alleging he spent excessive time abroad meeting with other world leaders.
In contrast to Starmer’s international focus, Andy Burnham has centered his campaign for the Labour leadership on domestic issues. Burnham, who served as the MP for Leigh from 2001 to 2017, has pledged to move away from neoliberalism and tackle trickle-down economics. Following his victory in the June Makerfield by-election, Burnham declared that the Labour Party has a “final chance to change” and aims to build a new political framework grounded in hope and unity. Despite their different approaches, Starmer noted that he has always maintained a good relationship with Burnham.
