Deadly Russian Strikes Hit Kyiv Ahead of Nato Summit

Rescue teams are currently searching through the debris of damaged apartment buildings in Kyiv following a series of early morning Russian strikes on Monday. The attack, which marks the second major assault on the Ukrainian capital within a single week, has resulted in at least nine deaths and left 46 people injured, including at least five children.

Timur Tkachenko, the city’s top military administrator, confirmed the casualty figures as emergency services worked to extract survivors from the rubble of partially destroyed residential blocks. According to Mayor Vitaly Klitschko, Russian ballistic missiles targeted multiple locations across the city, igniting fires in several apartment complexes and causing significant damage to warehouses and a garage workshop. Photos emerging from Kyiv show smouldering wreckage and charred cars littered throughout the city. Footage also shows crews continuing to comb through wreckage on Monday morning to find survivors.

The strikes occurred just hours after President Volodymyr Zelensky warned that intelligence indicated a second wave of attacks was imminent. The situation follows a intense bombardment of drone and missile strikes late last Thursday, which forced tens of thousands of residents to seek safety in metro stations early Friday morning. In that earlier incident, at least 30 people were killed, leading Ukraine to accuse Moscow of deliberately targeting civilian areas. Russia stated that its actions were in retaliation for Ukrainian strikes on energy facilities within Russian territory.

These latest strikes coincide with the eve of a Nato summit in Turkey, where President Zelensky is expected to meet with US President Donald Trump. Ahead of the summit, Zelensky has urged international allies to accelerate the delivery of long-range missiles for Ukraine’s air defense. In a post on X, he emphasized that any delay in providing these resources results in the loss of lives and emboldens Russia to continue the war. Additionally, Zelensky has requested that the US grant Ukraine licenses to manufacture Patriot defense missiles locally.

The regional conflict continues to escalate, with reports of power outages in the Russian-occupied city of Sevastopol in Crimea following overnight attacks.
