A large-scale overnight attack involving waves of ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and drones has struck Kyiv, resulting in the deaths of at least 10 people. Local officials reported that another 46 individuals sustained injuries as emergency responders worked to navigate the wreckage of residential high-rise buildings that suffered direct hits.
Tymur Tkachenko, the head of Kyiv’s City Military Administration, described the devastation in a post on Telegram, noting that the strikes targeted residential areas where people were sleeping. In the Podilskyi district, a residential building partially collapsed, while in the Darnytsia district, multiple multistory structures were damaged, leaving concerns that residents might still be trapped under debris.
The assault, which continued into Monday morning, prompted civilians to seek refuge in city subway stations as explosions were heard across the capital. This offensive occurred just hours after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned that a significant Russian attack was imminent. The timing coincides with the period leading up to a NATO summit scheduled to begin in Turkey.
Zelenskyy utilized Telegram to renew his appeals to Western partners for increased support for Ukraine’s air defense systems, specifically requesting additional Patriot missiles. He argued that failing to bolster these defenses only serves to embolden Russia in its ongoing four-year conflict. This recent violence follows a separate strike in Kyiv days earlier that claimed at least 31 lives, marking the largest attack since the start of the full-scale invasion.
Simultaneously, the Russian military claimed on Monday that it had intercepted 519 Ukrainian drones overnight. According to local authorities, these Ukrainian drones targeted various regions, including Moscow and Saint Petersburg, amidst the broader escalation of hostilities that saw at least 11 people killed in the Kyiv region due to Russian strikes.
