A large-scale search operation resumed at 7 a.m. on Wednesday off the coast of Tjörn, Sweden, as authorities continue to look for a woman and a child who went missing following a boat accident. The incident, which occurred on Tuesday evening, involved a recreational vessel that is suspected of colliding with a cargo ship.
Emergency services were alerted to the situation shortly after 10 p.m. on Tuesday. According to the Swedish Maritime Administration, the recreational boat had been traveling in the company of another vessel when the collision took place. The boat involved in the accident has since sunk, and wreckage has been recovered from the site, confirmed Niclas Härenstam, communications director at the Swedish Maritime Administration.
Four people were on board the recreational boat at the time of the collision: a man and a woman in their 40s, along with two younger children. The man and one of the children were recovered from the water and transported to a hospital with serious injuries, according to the police. Following the accident, a major rescue effort involving the coast guard, emergency services, and the Swedish Maritime Administration was launched, utilizing both helicopters and drones. The search was temporarily suspended at 2 a.m. on Wednesday due to darkness and poor weather conditions.
Niclas Härenstam stated that the plan for Wednesday morning involved using a helicopter to survey a wider area. Authorities have also stopped the merchant ship suspected of being involved in the collision. The vessel is currently located just south of Tjörn, where police are conducting a technical examination. Interviews with those involved have been held overnight and will continue throughout the day.
While police spokesman August Brandt confirmed that a preliminary investigation into negligence in maritime traffic has been initiated, he noted that the classification is the one closest to hand based on initial information and may change. At present, no individuals have been officially notified of being suspected of a crime. Police officials have indicated that while they have a working theory regarding the sequence of events, they require further information before releasing specific details to the public.
