A tragic shooting occurred at a youth welfare facility in northern Germany on Monday, resulting in the deaths of six individuals. Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances, which they believe may have stemmed from a domestic custody dispute. A primary suspect has been taken into police custody.
Police confirmed that five victims—four women and one man—lost their lives at the scene of the incident in the town of Stade. A sixth victim, also an adult, passed away later after being transported to a hospital. All six deceased individuals were reported to be employees of the youth center or its affiliated organizations.
Daniela Behrens, the interior minister for the Lower Saxony region, addressed the media during a press conference. She described the event as an extremely violent, cold-blooded crime that was “apparently in a custody dispute,” and noted that police are working under high pressure to uncover the motive and the precise sequence of events.
According to reports from the German news agency dpa, several other individuals sustained injuries during the attack, some of which are considered serious. However, police have not yet released specific figures regarding the number of wounded or provided details on the identities of those involved.
The shooting took place at a facility located on Dankersstrasse, a road situated south of the town center. The center provides services including temporary housing for pregnant women and young mothers accompanied by children. In addition to the main suspect who was arrested, authorities noted that two other individuals were subjected to “police measures” on suspicion of potential involvement, though further details were not disclosed.
Local footage captured following the incident revealed a significant law enforcement presence, along with multiple ambulances and emergency personnel stationed along the residential street. Vitali Mertens, a resident living across from the facility, reported hearing gunshots and stated that the surrounding area was immediately cordoned off by authorities.
Germany maintains gun regulations that are significantly more restrictive than those in the United States, and mass shootings remain a rare occurrence. The town of Stade, which has a population of approximately 50,000, is located about 40 kilometers, or 25 miles, from Hamburg.
