South African police confirmed on Wednesday that more than 900 individuals were taken into custody during nationwide anti-migrant protests held on Tuesday, June 30. While the vast majority of the demonstrations remained orderly, officials noted that certain locations experienced outbreaks of violence and looting, necessitating police intervention.
Tebello Mosikili, a deputy national police commissioner, provided details on the security response during a press conference. According to Mosikili, a total of 120 separate marches were recorded across the country throughout the day. Of those events, 108 concluded peacefully, while authorities were forced to step in to manage unrest at the remaining 12 locations.
