A severe wildfire tearing through southern Spain has resulted in at least 11 deaths, according to regional authorities. While the exact cause of the blaze remains under investigation, the disaster occurred against a backdrop of intense European heat waves that saw temperatures in the region soar to nearly 106 degrees.
Antonio Sanz, the regional health minister of Andalucia, stated that four of the victims appear to be of British origin. This conclusion was drawn based on the position of the steering wheel in a vehicle found at the scene, which was on the right side, distinguishing it from standard European vehicles. Regional President Juanma Moreno confirmed that the majority of those who perished were foreigners, noting that the identification process is still ongoing.
Sanz explained that several victims likely died after attempting to escape the flames on their own rather than following the official evacuation routes. He described how these individuals ventured into a dry riverbed that ultimately became a trap as the fire spread. To ensure public safety, authorities have implemented a lockdown and relocated approximately 122 area residents to a nearby theater and a sports center.
Hundreds of emergency personnel are currently deployed to contain the fire, which officials have categorized as highly serious due to the dense vegetation in the affected area. The inferno has already consumed nearly 7,800 acres of natural terrain and reached a local highway, complicating safety efforts for those in the vicinity.
The tragedy prompted a response from the Spanish Royal Family, who expressed their deep sadness over the loss of life. During a ceremony at the General Air and Space Academy in Murcia, King Felipe requested a moment of silence for the victims, leading to the cancellation of a scheduled toast. In an earlier social media statement, the royals extended their condolences to the families of the deceased and voiced their support for the emergency responders working to manage the crisis.
