Super Typhoon Bavi moved across the island of Rota on Monday morning, forcing residents of the small U.S. territorial island to shelter as the storm delivered powerful winds and heavy rainfall. The National Weather Service reported that the cyclone, which also threatens Guam and other parts of the Northern Mariana Islands, is creating an imminent danger to life. Meteorologist Edwin Montvila noted that Rota, which has a population of fewer than 2,000 people, is already enduring catastrophic wind conditions.
Forecasters expect the storm to reach Category 5 status, with sustained winds potentially hitting 180 mph and gusts as high as 215 mph. In addition to Rota, typhoon warnings remain in effect for Guam, Tinian, and Saipan through at least Monday night. Residents in these areas have been advised to brace for winds of at least 50 mph with gusts near 70 mph, alongside rising sea levels. Destructive conditions are anticipated to persist until Tuesday morning.
Authorities have urged individuals to remain in interior rooms away from windows, warning that emerging outside could be fatal due to flying debris and downed utility lines. While the storm showed erratic movement overnight, its relatively fast pace provides some hope for a quicker departure. However, the sheer size of the system means the islands will likely continue to experience tropical storm conditions and torrential rain throughout the day.
Guam Governor Lou Leon Guerrero has called on citizens to stay indoors or at designated shelters to avoid road hazards, emphasizing that the territory remains prepared for such weather emergencies. Meanwhile, local residents expressed a mix of caution and resignation. The Rev. Francis Hezel, a priest in Dededo, Guam, reported hearing howling winds but expressed optimism that the island’s concrete housing infrastructure would prevent widespread structural failure, suggesting that for many, the primary concern remains the potential for prolonged power outages.
