A severe thunderstorm system moved across Sweden on Sunday, resulting in more than 10,000 lightning strikes recorded nationwide. Meteorological data from the Swedish weather agency SMHI indicated that the weather event was particularly intense in a region stretching from Småland to southern Gästrikland, which bore the brunt of the atmospheric instability.
By approximately 6 p.m. on Sunday, SMHI meteorologist Erik Höjgård-Olsen noted that the storm activity was beginning to subside. He reported that while 3,000 strikes occurred in the half-hour leading up to that point, the most recent half-hour saw just over 2,000 strikes, signaling a gradual easing of the weather front as it tracked toward the Baltic coast.
The extreme weather led to several incidents across the country. In Haninge, located south of Stockholm, a barn caught fire due to the storm, while reports also emerged of a water leak in Huddinge. Furthermore, the sporting world was affected when a football match between Kalmar FF and Örgryte IS in Kalmar had to be abandoned due to the heavy rain and lightning, according to the local newspaper Barometern.
Authorities have maintained a yellow weather warning for significant rainfall in the regions of Västerbotten and Västernorrland, specifically areas south of Umeå. This advisory is expected to remain in effect until approximately 2 p.m. on Monday as the remnants of the storm continue to impact the northern parts of the country.
