Tara Polar Station Departs on Scientific Expedition to North Pole

The Tara Polar Station, a specialized scientific research vessel engineered to drift alongside sea ice, departed from the port of Lorient this past Sunday. The vessel’s departure was marked by a gathering of several hundred observers, including the Minister for the Sea, Catherine Chabaud.

This mission serves as the first expedition for the unique, saucer-shaped station, which is designed to function like an igloo mounted on a massive buoy. The structure is built to endure extreme conditions, including temperatures as low as −52 °C and the immense pressure exerted by sea ice. The primary objective of the crew is to study Arctic biodiversity and the accelerating effects of global warming in a region where sea ice is retreating rapidly and temperatures are rising three to four times faster than the global average.

The mission involves a coalition of twelve countries, including Germany, Canada, the United States, Spain, Switzerland, and Japan. The project, which carries an estimated cost of 6 million euros, initiates a broader program of ten expeditions planned between 2026 and 2045, with a mission scheduled every two years.

Operational logistics for the current journey include sailing along the Russian coast starting in mid-August, escorted by an icebreaker. By early September, the station is expected to be captured by the pack ice. It will then drift for 350 to 500 days at an average speed of approximately ten kilometres per day, eventually reaching the Fram Strait between Greenland and Svalbard by the end of 2027.

The vessel will host twelve residents during the winter months, including six scientists, and eighteen during the summer. These crew members underwent rigorous medical and psychological testing, as well as team-building seminars, to prepare for the harsh environment, which includes five months of polar night and average winter temperatures of −25 °C. To mitigate risks from wildlife, specifically polar bears, the crew has been trained in firearm usage, and a Lapponian herder dog will accompany the mission to assist with animal detection.

Equipped with state-of-the-art instruments and a specialized well located at the station's core, researchers intend to collect more than 10,000 samples from the atmosphere, the sea ice cavities, and the water column at depths reaching 2,000 metres. These efforts aim to provide critical data on Arctic biodiversity and improve existing climate models, particularly through the study of bacterial roles in cloud reflectivity.

Thanks to a well built at the heart of the station and state-of-the-art scientific instruments, researchers will take more than 10,000 samples from the water column, down to a depth of 2,000 metres, as well as from the atmosphere and cavities within the sea ice.
