President Donald Trump delivered a sharp critique of Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff during a July 22 rally held at Wheeler High School in Marietta, Georgia. The event, officially billed as a White House visit to promote new Trump-branded accounts for newborns, functioned largely as a campaign rally as Republicans push to unseat the first-term senator in the upcoming November midterms.
Addressing the crowd, the president labeled Ossoff a "Democrat communist" and attempted to mock him by referencing the 1980s television character Pee-wee Herman, famously portrayed by the late Paul Reubens. During his initial remarks, the president misidentified the character as "Pinky Herman," asking the audience, "Did you ever see 'Pinky Herman?"
Later in the address, the president corrected his reference while discussing U.S. Representative Mike Collins, his endorsed Republican candidate who is vying for Ossoff’s seat. "Maybe the most important man in this room right now is not here. His name is Mike Collins and he's going to beat Pee-wee Herman," Trump stated. Collins, a congressman since 2023 and a vocal ally of the president, had issued a video prior to the event explaining his absence due to legislative obligations in Washington.
Republicans currently hold a 53-47 seat majority in the Senate and view Georgia as a critical battleground for expanding their control. Democrats, meanwhile, consider retaining the state essential for any viable path to capturing the Senate majority. Ossoff, who won his seat in 2020 during a historic Democratic sweep alongside Senator Raphael Warnock and President Joe Biden, has maintained a slight lead in recent polling according to the president's remarks.
During his speech, the president claimed, "I fought Ossoff before, and as you know, we won," referencing the 2017 special election for a Georgia congressional seat that Ossoff lost. He further criticized the senator’s standing in Washington, stating, "He's not respected at all in Washington. You don't even hear his name mentioned. He's not even a factor." The Ossoff campaign did not issue an immediate response to the remarks.
The president also used the platform to reiterate warnings about election integrity, following a July 16 primetime speech where he alleged, without providing new evidence, that China attempted to influence the 2020 election. "Make it too big to rig and watch those machines," he told supporters in Georgia. The FBI is currently investigating the 2020 election results in the state, which the president has continued to falsely claim he won.
