Spain is currently facing a severe wildfire season, with two major blazes in the north-eastern and central regions pushing the total area burned nationwide to approximately 50,000 hectares. Emergency services are currently focused on a fire in Guadalajara province, near La Mierla, and another in Zaragoza province, near Orés. These incidents are among the most destructive in the country this year, with total wildfire damage already nearly triple what was recorded during the same period in 2025 across 18 major fires.
In the Guadalajara region, authorities in Castilla-La Mancha reported that the blaze is exhibiting extreme behavior due to strong south-westerly winds. Flames are advancing at a rate exceeding 60 metres per minute, making the fire difficult to control. During the early hours of Sunday, firefighters worked to protect the villages of Navas de Jadraque and Bustares while launching a direct attack on the southern edge of the fire near Gascueña de Bornova. So far, 16 villages and surrounding areas, including communities near the Beleña reservoir, have been evacuated. Spain’s Civil Guard is investigating the cause, with authorities suspecting that the fire may have been ignited during agricultural operations involving a combine harvester.
Meanwhile, in Zaragoza, the wildfire near Orés has consumed more than 15,400 hectares. Fire officials noted that the blaze showed more favourable behavior overnight, allowing for the deployment of additional ground teams and aircraft as weather conditions moderated. Evacuation orders remain in effect for Orés, Asín, Luesia, Malpica de Arba, and Uncastillo, while residents in Sos del Rey Católico, Navardún, Urriés, and Castiliscar have been placed on alert. Approximately 450 personnel are monitoring the situation to protect the Sierra de Santo Domingo natural area and nearby communities. The Aragón 112 emergency service explicitly dismissed online rumors suggesting that tractors were required to assist in the firefighting efforts.
Other regions are also contending with fire activity. In Huesca, firefighters are battling a blaze near the town of Plan, though its spread has slowed, and a fire near Fiscal has been largely stabilized. Southern Spain is seeing action near Laujar de Andarax in Almería and Purullena in Granada, where officials report favourable progress. Elsewhere, residents of Árchez in Málaga have been cleared to return home following stabilization, and authorities in the Madrid region have brought a fire near Lozoyuela under control after it scorched over 700 hectares.
