Typhoon Bavi has officially made landfall in China’s eastern province of Zhejiang late Saturday night, according to reports from state media. In preparation for the storm, authorities have evacuated over 1.7 million people. While the typhoon is expected to continue moving northwestward inland, its intensity is projected to weaken gradually.
Before reaching the Chinese mainland, the storm caused widespread disruption across the region. In Taiwan, the typhoon brought life to a near standstill, forcing the evacuation of more than 10,000 people at risk of landslides. Correspondent Rik Glauert noted that over 150,000 households lost power, while more than 1,100 domestic and international flights were canceled. Schools and offices across the territory remained closed for two days. Despite being downgraded from a super typhoon, the storm still battered Taipei with winds exceeding 100 kph and over a meter of rainfall, resulting in toppled trees, damaged power lines, and localized flooding.
Japan’s Okinawa prefecture also suffered significant impacts, as the storm lashed the Sakishima island chain with sustained winds reaching 144 kilometers (90 miles) per hour. The severe weather led to the cancellation of 345 flights, the suspension of ferry services, and left more than 24,000 households without electricity.
The destructive path of Bavi began last week as a super typhoon over the US Pacific territories of Guam and the Northern Marianas. As it moved toward the Philippines, it triggered severe flooding and landslides. According to the country’s meteorological agency, at least 17 people were killed, including ten in a landslide in the town of Malapatan, five in Lanao del Sur, and two who drowned in Bukidnon province. Additionally, nine people remain missing in Mindanao, and at least four individuals were reported injured. Overall, the storm has affected more than 500,000 people in the Philippines, with over 11,000 residents forced to flee their homes.
