The conflict between Ukraine and Russia continues with a series of deadly exchanges, as both nations launch significant strikes targeting military and energy infrastructure. At least one child has been reported among the casualties in these reciprocal attacks.

Ukraine has intensified its long-range operations, successfully hitting a major natural gas plant and satellite centers within Russia. Kyiv also reported striking a railway bridge leading to Crimea, an action aimed at further isolating the Russian-held peninsula. Ukrainian drones set a Moscow refinery ablaze in a substantial attack on the Russian capital, and another drone strike in southern Russia resulted in one fatality and ignited a fire at a sea terminal. Further Ukrainian assaults have targeted military and energy sites across Russia, including setting off fires at oil facilities in both Russia and Crimea. Ukrainian drones also struck a St. Petersburg oil terminal ahead of the city hosting a Russian economic forum, with Ukraine continuing its assault on Russian oil sites while denying any strike on a Kremlin-occupied nuclear plant.

In response, Russia has carried out its own destructive attacks. An apartment building in the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv was struck, killing one person. A large-scale Russian attack sparked a fire at a historic monastery and other locations in Ukraine. A Russian barrage in Ukraine claimed 11 lives and damaged a landmark cathedral. Officials also reported a massive Russian attack that killed 22 people across Ukraine, indicating an escalation in fighting by Moscow. Additionally, a Russian drone targeting Ukraine reportedly hit an apartment building in Romania, injuring two people.

Amidst the military actions, diplomatic efforts and political tensions persist. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy returned Poland’s highest honor after the Polish leader revoked it due to a spat over history, specifically concerning the naming of an army unit after a notorious World War II group. European Union leaders have been squabbling over outreach to Moscow even as the war rages on, with the EU seeking to reopen communication channels with Russia. Zelenskyy announced that G7 leaders have pledged more vital assistance for Ukraine against Russia. Ukraine has also begun EU membership talks, a process expected to involve years of reforms while the nation continues to fight Russia. The EU formally agreed to launch these membership talks with Ukraine next week, despite the ongoing conflict. The U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill to aid Ukraine and impose new sanctions on Russia. European leaders have voiced an “urgent need” to bolster Ukraine’s defenses against ballistic missiles. Zelenskyy has also publicly called on Putin for direct negotiations in a neutral country and is pressing the U.S. for more Patriot missiles to counter Russian strikes. Separately, the new government in Bulgaria has announced it will cease supplying weapons to Ukraine, while Zelenskyy has stated Ukraine is ready to share drone technology with Nordic and Baltic countries.

The human toll of the conflict remains significant. A former combatant who lost his sight now teaches pottery to other blind veterans, offering a path to recovery. Ukrainian mothers are experiencing a rising number of complications with their pregnancies, and some regions are seeing an increase in premature births as Ukraine battles Russia’s invasion.
