The United States military has initiated a series of strikes against Iran, describing the operation as a "powerful response" to an attempted surprise attack on American forces in the Middle East. According to Centcom, the military action was triggered by Iranian strikes on Tuesday that targeted US bases in Jordan and vessels navigating the Strait of Hormuz.
This escalation marks a significant turn in the conflict, which has now persisted for five months. The hostilities had briefly subsided following several days of relative calm, during which time there were reports that diplomatic talks had resumed. While President Donald Trump characterized these as "very friendly negotiations," officials in Tehran denied that any such discussions were taking place.
Hours before the strikes were officially announced on Wednesday, President Trump confirmed his intent to retaliate for the attempted attack on US troops that occurred the previous day. Speaking to reporters at the White House, the president stated, "We're going to be hitting them very hard because it's our turn to hit them." He added that the Iranian leadership was aware of the impending response, noting, "They know it's coming. They asked us not to do it."
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed responsibility for targeting a US air base and a command centre in Jordan, justifying the action as a response to the "acts of aggression of the American child-killing army." Furthermore, the IRGC stated that its naval forces had struck three oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, alleging that the ships had "ignored warnings" while sailing through an "unsafe and illegal route" in the Gulf.
The current military activity follows a period of intense fighting. Last Friday, President Trump had suspended a 13-night intensive bombing campaign that targeted Iranian military sites and weapons caches, which resulted in scores of reported deaths. Additionally, on Tuesday, Centcom reported that joint US-Saudi strikes had hit multiple logistics and weapons sites in eastern Iraq in retaliation for over 30 IRGC-directed drone attacks occurring within a 72-hour window. Although the Iraqi presidency condemned the bombing of PMF bases as a "blatant violation of Iraq's sovereignty," President Trump asserted to Fox News that the strikes were "co-ordinated with the Iraqi government." The ongoing struggle for regional dominance between Saudi Arabia and Iran continues to define the broader conflict.
