Venezuela was struck by two powerful, consecutive earthquakes on Wednesday evening, resulting in a tragic loss of life. As of Thursday morning, authorities have confirmed that more than 160 people have died, while hundreds of others have sustained injuries. Officials caution that the total number of fatalities is likely to increase as rescue operations continue.

The seismic event consisted of a 7.2 magnitude foreshock followed closely by a larger 7.5 magnitude earthquake just 39 seconds later. This sequence represents the most significant seismic activity recorded in Venezuela in over a century. Because earthquakes are measured on a logarithmic scale, each whole number increase represents 32 times more energy; consequently, the 7.5 magnitude shock was twice as powerful as the initial 7.2 tremor.

Both occurrences are classified as major earthquakes. The tremors were felt extensively throughout Venezuela and were also perceived by residents in neighboring Colombia. Emergency responders anticipate that further reports will detail widespread destruction to residential buildings and essential infrastructure in the days ahead.

The impact of the disaster also crippled the region’s communication capabilities. According to performance data provided by the digital watchdog Netblocks, there was a sudden and sharp decline in internet connectivity throughout Venezuela, directly linked to the extensive damage inflicted upon power grids and telecommunications systems.
