The Venice Film Festival has officially announced that American actor, director, and producer George Clooney will be honored with this year’s Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement. A frequent visitor to the Lido, Clooney has presented multiple films at the festival over the years, including his recent work on Netflix’s Jay Kelly.

Reflecting on the recognition, Clooney expressed his appreciation for the festival, calling it his favorite. He remarked, “I’ve had so many extraordinary moments in Venice. This festival is without question my favourite and to be given the Golden Lion is a tremendous honour. It also probably means I’m old, but I’ll take it.”

Festival director Alberto Barbera praised the artist, describing him as a “complete and charismatic” figure who has transformed his deep vocation into a luminous career. Barbera noted that Clooney’s journey from an early career launched without shortcuts with small roles in TV series and B-movies to his breakout success in the series ER helped shape an actor capable of inhabiting the screen with disarming spontaneity. According to Barbera, Clooney is endowed with the gift of making his characters seem not only credible but desirable, approachable, and human thanks to his undeniable charm. But Clooney’s charisma is constructed on his credibility, not on his image, because his seductive side has never been merely aesthetic.

Barbera also highlighted Clooney’s versatility across genres, citing his performances in war films like Three Kings and Syriana, thrillers such as Michael Clayton, and sophisticated comedies including Ocean’s Eleven and O Brother Where Art Thou?. He further pointed to the actor’s work in science fiction hits like Gravity and Solaris, as well as bittersweet comedies such as The Descendants and Up In the Air. Beyond acting, Barbera lauded the nine films Clooney has directed, noting that projects like Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, Good Night and Good Luck, The Ides of March, and Suburbicon reveal an ambitious, rule-breaking approach to cinema that mirrors his commitment to social and humanitarian causes.

The 83rd edition of the Venice Film Festival is scheduled to run from 2-12 September. Maggie Gyllenhaal will preside over this year’s jury, which includes Kaouther Ben Hania, Daniel Blumberg, Francesco Casetti, Xavier Giannoli, Shahrbanoo Sadat, and Johnnie To. The full line-up for the festival will be unveiled on 23 July.
