This visit marks Burnham's first overseas guest as prime minister and highlights the United Kingdom's continued commitment to Kyiv. According to data from No 10, the UK has provided £25bn in total support to Ukraine since the Russian invasion began in February 2022, with £16bn allocated to military assistance. The leaders are expected to review joint projects, including the Stone Cloak electronic jamming system, which allows Ukraine to disrupt Russian drone operations. The UK has shared the intellectual property for this technology, which is slated for integration into new British weaponry such as cruise missiles.
The diplomatic engagement occurs amid a surge in hostilities. Romania’s government is summoning the Russian ambassador after a Romanian F-16 fighter jet intercepted and shot down a third drone in three days over the Black Sea. Defense Minister Radu Miruță confirmed the incident occurred five minutes after the drone entered Romanian airspace. Romanian President Nicușor Dan identified a drone downed on Friday as a Russian-made Shahed model, with investigations ongoing for those intercepted over the weekend.
Maritime tensions have also spiked following the sinking of the international cargo vessel Golden Leo off the coast of Odesa on Sunday. The ship, which was carrying corn, had been shelled by Russian forces on 19 July. The attack resulted in nine crew deaths, while eight others were evacuated. Russia’s defense ministry asserted that its forces were targeting Ukrainian port infrastructure, claiming that the container terminal at Chornomorsk was utilized for military shipments.
Overnight into Sunday, the Ukrainian air force reported that Russia launched 136 drones and seven ballistic missiles. Casualties were reported across multiple regions: a drone strike on a supermarket in Chernihiv killed two people, including a nine-year-old child, and injured 25. In Kharkiv, a daytime drone attack resulted in one death and 16 injuries, according to Mayor Ihor Terekhov. Regional governor Ivan Fedorov stated that a glide bomb attack in Zaporizhzhia killed one person and wounded six. In Kyiv, Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that a missile strike caused a fire in a multi-storey apartment building, wounding three. Additionally, two employees of the national oil and gas company Naftogaz were killed in Sloviansk while providing aid to residents following an earlier strike.
Attacks were also reported in areas under Russian control. Regional authorities in the Russian city of Belgorod stated that 12 people, including two children, were injured by a drone attack early Monday. In the Russian-occupied city of Horlivka, a Ukrainian drone strike reportedly killed four people. Ukraine has consistently denied targeting civilian infrastructure.
